It was lovely to end the month with another winner, our 2nd in August from just 8 runners. Beholden deservedly got off the mark over hurdles at Newton Abbot having been hitting the frame with three placed efforts in novice hurdles so far this season. Gavin was positive with him, and he jumped better as a result and won by 12 lengths. We’ll look to step him into handicap company now, and I’d like to think that he’ll keep improving now.
Beholden in glorious isolation at Newton Abbot.
The old boy, Fact of the Matter was 3rd at Newton Abbot on Monday where he jumped and travelled with such enthusiasm, but he was outpaced when the speed of the race lifted and then stayed on well once he got his breath. He did well to be 3rd as we know despite his enthusiasm and boyish athleticism, his older legs aren’t as quick anymore. He still dearly loves the game though, and as we have him fit and well, we’ll look to keep going into the autumn before he earns an honourable retirement.
We ran two at Worcester last night where Howdilyoudo was 2nd and Dark Motive was 5th. Howdilyoudo ran an absolute blinder and quickened up really well from three out but just couldn’t quite get to the eventual winner. She has won twice this season, and should be able to win again over hurdles, before she goes chasing. Meanwhile, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall’s Dark Motive ran well enough on her 2nd start over hurdles, and should be able to win a small handicap somewhere this autumn.
Howdilyoudo is narrowly denied at Worcester last night.
